About Pac-Man

Game History

Released in 1980 by Namco, Pac-Man is one of the most iconic and influential arcade games of all time. Created by Toru Iwatani, the game was designed to appeal to a wider audience beyond the typical space shooter games of that era.

The simple yet addictive gameplay of navigating a yellow character through a maze while eating dots and avoiding ghosts became a cultural phenomenon. Pac-Man was the first game to feature characters with distinct personalities and behaviors, revolutionizing game design forever.

Game Features

  • Classic maze-based gameplay that's easy to learn but difficult to master
  • Four distinctive ghost enemies (Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde) each with unique behaviors
  • Power pellets that temporarily allow Pac-Man to eat the ghosts
  • Bonus fruits that appear for extra points
  • Increasingly challenging levels with faster ghosts and new patterns
  • Iconic sound effects and music that are instantly recognizable

Did You Know?

The original Japanese name for Pac-Man was "Puck-Man," changed internationally to avoid vandalism.

The ghosts' behavior is precisely programmed: Blinky chases directly, Pinky ambushes, Inky flanks, and Clyde acts unpredictably.

The game's design was inspired by a pizza with a slice removed, representing Pac-Man's iconic shape.

Pac-Man was the first video game to have power-ups, introducing a fundamental game mechanic that is still used today.

How to Play

Basic Controls

Controlling Pac-Man is simple and intuitive:

  • Use the Arrow Keys to move Pac-Man up, down, left, and right through the maze
  • On mobile devices, swipe in the direction you want Pac-Man to move
  • Press Space to start the game or pause during gameplay

Game Objectives

The primary goals in Pac-Man are:

  • Eat all the dots in the maze to complete each level
  • Avoid the four colorful ghosts (unless you've eaten a power pellet)
  • Eat power pellets to temporarily turn ghosts blue, making them vulnerable
  • Collect bonus fruits that appear in the center of the maze for extra points
  • Reach the highest score possible by completing multiple levels

Ghost Behaviors

Blinky (Red)

Pursues Pac-Man directly and becomes faster after a certain number of dots are eaten. The most aggressive ghost!

Pinky (Pink)

Tries to ambush Pac-Man by targeting a position ahead of his current direction. Works to corner Pac-Man.

Inky (Blue)

Uses both Blinky's position and Pac-Man's position to determine movement. The most unpredictable ghost!

Clyde (Orange)

Alternates between chasing Pac-Man and wandering randomly. Acts shy when too close to Pac-Man.

Tips for Success

  • Learn the ghost behaviors to predict and avoid their movements
  • Use power pellets strategically to clear out ghosts in difficult areas
  • Save some power pellets for when you really need them
  • Use the tunnel on either side of the maze to quickly escape from ghosts
  • Clear the bottom rows first to reduce the area you need to defend
  • Watch the fruit timer - fruits appear twice in each level
